The Opportunity

Lesley University’s Department of Integrated Studies is seeking a qualified adjunct faculty member to teach: The History of Women, Gender, Race and Animation (IAHIS 2465), Spring 2026 semester, Thursdays 1:15-3:45 PM, fully in-person, on campus

Course Description:

Contemporary animation has emerged as a primary means of both social and cultural expression. This course examines how the issues of gender, sexuality and race are represented in animation and related time -based media. This course illustrates the importance of recognition and representation for artists who are of marginalized communities to remain relevant in the industry. Students will research both the animators and subject matter of animations and time-based media throughout history, examine contemporary examples of animation as a tool to express ideas and promote activism, and respond by creating time-based media that addresses their own reflections on contemporary cultural and political issues.

Qualifications and Capabilities

A successful candidate will have:

  • MA or PhD in Art History or MFA in Visual Arts or related fields preferred
  • At least 2+ years of teaching experience in Art History (or related fields) at the college level and/or two years of professional experience in visual arts organizations or design-related practices (such as museums, university galleries, design firms, etc.)
  • Experience teaching Art History or Studio Art (or related fields) in a Visual Arts program preferred
